Travelzoo Trade Show Booth Design

27 Mar

Kwah-li members designed a trade show booth concept for Travelzoo.com.  The concept centers around lounge and bar style seating groups accentuated by a key feature wall, information kiosk and a large, ceiling-hung sign. Together they create an inviting environment for the trade show attendee.

The problem: a 5′x20′ shed with a 3′ man door on the long side; tough to get in and out of with a car parked under the car port; impossible to get anything in and out with a car parked under the car port. An extremely poor design.

The solution: blow a hole in the side and cover it up with a sliding barn door. This allows for easier access with an adjacent car, eliminates  door dings, and creates the opportunity to set up a work space in the shed.

A huge thanks goes out to kwah-li friends Bryan Jacob and John Barton for help on the project. Here is a final night shot after finally adding the 1×2′s to the door.

WTF House

9 Nov

Because who wouldn’t want a house with a first floor that was 50% garage.

DC told me he wanted to show me a house he’d recently seen while out on a driver. And he showed me this.
This is not a duplex. This is a house being built, at the end of a cul-de-sac, overlooking one of the nicest golf courses in St. Louis. That’s in addition to the expansive views of the Meramec river valley. A truly exquisite piece of property that deserves the finest touch only the best commercial home builders can provide.
It’s brilliant! It solves that pesky problem: “Do I want my garage off the kitchen or the living room?”
Four car garages are for suckers. Who would want the convenience of having all of your garage needs in one central location when you can really show your neighbors who’s boss by showing them that your expensive cars are too nice to be kept in the garage with your other expensive cars.
Front yard? Waste of grass. Fill it with driveway. Nothing to mow.
It’s a revolution that will save us from the housing crisis. We just never had enough garage.

OVER THE EDGE

21 Sep

I got to go up to the new sky deck at the Sears Tower (to hell with Willis). I got to say, it’s unnerving to know that the only thing seperating you and a 1,000 ft fall is a 1″ piece of glass and my Chuck Taylors.

RECLAIMING THE STREET

18 Sep

Just outside my office at 600 W. Jackson in Chicago, a group of urban achievers has claimed a street side parking stall for themselves. By plugging the meter and laying down a nice swath of grass, they have created a bit of an oasis on an otherwise busy west-loop street.
